How to Install Pet Door Window Latch Lock – LockLatch®

Installation Video

  • Tools Required

    • Electric drill – To drill fixing holes in the door or window frame.
    • Drill bits – A 5mm drill bit for pop rivets, or a suitable pilot drill bit for one-way screws.
    • Pop rivet gun – For installation using pop rivets on aluminium, PVC or metal frames.
    • Screwdriver – For installing the supplied one-way screws on wood or metal frames.
    • Centre punch and hammer (recommended for metal) – To prevent the drill bit from slipping.
  • Components

    The LockLatch® comes with:

    • Stainless steel Pet Latch:

    1. Lock housing – The cylindrical locking component that receives and secures the latch pin.

    2. Adjustable latch – The extendable rod that connects to the lock housing.

Step 1: Determine the Installation Position

  • Position the components on opposite sides of the opening so the latch pin can engage smoothly with the lock. The lock housing has an offset mounting plate and four engagement holes, allowing flexibility when positioning the latch. Before drilling, check that the chosen position allows the window or door to open and close correctly.

  • Remove the protective backing from the double-sided adhesive tape on the lock housing's mounting plate.

Place the lock housing in the desired position on the window or door frame. The adhesive tape will temporarily hold the housing in place while you check the alignment and mark the fixing holes.

    Do not drill yet.

  • Insert the adjustable latch pin into the lock housing.

Move the window or door towards the opposite frame to determine where the latch mounting plate should sit. Remove the adhesive backing and temporarily position the latch mounting plate.

    Check that:

    • Both mounting plates sit firmly against their surfaces.
    • The latch pin aligns with the lock housing.
    • The window or door opens and closes correctly.
    • The latch locks and unlocks smoothly.
    • The opening gap can be adjusted as required.

Once satisfied, use a marker pen to mark the four fixing holes (two on each mounting plate).

Step 4: Drill the Fixing Holes

  • Remove the temporarily positioned components.

For aluminium or other smooth metal frames, use a centre punch and hammer to make small indentations at the marked positions. This helps prevent the drill bit from slipping.

The drilling requirements depend on the fixing method.

If fixing into masonry, suitable wall plugs will be required. Check that drilling will not damage glass, glazing seals or internal frame components.

  • For Aluminium, PVC and Metal – Pop Rivets

    • Use a 5mm drill bit.
    • Drill four fixing holes at the marked positions.
    • Ensure the holes align with both mounting plates.
  • For Wood and Metal – One-Way Screws

    • Drill four pilot holes at the marked positions.
    • Use a drill bit slightly smaller in diameter than the supplied one-way screws.
    • Ensure the pilot holes are correctly positioned before proceeding.

Step 5: Secure the LockLatch®

Reposition both mounting plates over the drilled holes.

  • For Pop Rivet Installation

    1. Insert the supplied pop rivets through the mounting plate holes.
    2. Use a pop rivet gun to secure each rivet until the mandrel snaps.
    3. Repeat for all four fixing points.
    4. Check that both mounting plates are firmly secured.

  • For One-Way Screw Installation

    1. Align the mounting plates with the pilot holes.
    2. Insert the supplied one-way screws.
    3. Use a screwdriver to tighten all four screws securely.
    4. Check that the mounting plates are firmly attached.

One-way screws are designed to be difficult to remove once installed, so confirm the positioning before tightening.

Step 6: Lock and Adjust the Opening

With both mounting plates secured, insert the latch pin into one of the four engagement holes in the lock housing.

Use the supplied key to tighten the locking grub screw and secure the latch pin.

To adjust the opening gap:

  1. Unlock the latch using the key.
  2. Rotate the threaded section of the adjustable rod.
  3. Wind the rod in to reduce the opening gap, or out to increase it.
  4. Reinsert the pin and lock it securely.

The adjustable design allows you to control how far the window or door remains open for ventilation or pet access.

Step 7: Test the Locking System

Once installed, check that:

  • The latch engages smoothly with the lock housing.
  • The locking grub screw holds the latch pin securely.
  • The window or door cannot open beyond the selected position while locked.
  • The opening gap can be adjusted correctly when unlocked.
  • All mounting plates and fixings remain secure.
  • The window or door operates normally when the latch is disengaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between LockLatch® and PetLatch®?

Both products work in a similar way, but offer different opening ranges.

  • LockLatch® A: Approximately 90–175mm, suitable for smaller openings and ventilation.
  • PetLatch® B: Approximately 175–230mm, designed for larger openings, including pet access.

Can I install the LockLatch® on an aluminium frame?

Yes. The LockLatch® can be installed on aluminium frames using the supplied pop rivets. A 5mm drill bit and pop rivet gun are required.

Can I install the LockLatch® on a wooden frame?

Yes. For wooden frames, use the supplied one-way screws. Drill pilot holes slightly smaller than the screws before installation.

Can I adjust the opening gap after installation?

Yes. Unlock the latch and rotate the threaded section of the rod to increase or decrease the gap. Lock the latch again once adjusted.

Can I use LockLatch® on an outward-opening window or door?

The LockLatch® is designed for a range of opening configurations. However, the mounting position depends on the frame design and opening direction. Check alignment and operation before drilling.

Maintenance and Cleaning

The LockLatch® is manufactured from C304 stainless steel. Periodic cleaning helps maintain its appearance and performance, especially in coastal environments.

Recommended cleaning frequency:

  • Inland areas: Every 6 months.
  • Coastal areas: Every 3 months.
  • Direct seafront locations: Monthly.

For cleaning:

  • Use warm water and mild detergent to remove dirt and grime.
  • Use a soft nylon brush to clean difficult-to-reach areas.
  • Avoid steel wool, abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals.
  • A light lubricating oil may be used if dirt build-up affects movement.

Regularly check that all fixings remain secure and the locking mechanism operates smoothly.

Important: The LockLatch® provides controlled opening and additional security, but should not be treated as a substitute for comprehensive security measures or child-safety devices. Ensure the installation does not obstruct any required emergency exit.

The LockLatch is a simple, adjustable locking system that allows windows and doors to remain partially open while helping prevent unwanted access.
Ideal for pet access and everyday ventilation, the LockLatch® is made from durable stainless steel and can be installed on a variety of window and door frames, including aluminium, wood, steel and PVC.
