Overview

The DIY Xpanda Expandable Barrier is a practical solution for controlling access and improving safety around homes, garages, workshops, and busy environments. Designed primarily for pedestrian management and temporary access control, it is suitable for residential, retail, and light commercial situations where flexible zoning or safety separation is needed. Its lightweight aluminium frame and rolling castor make it easy to deploy, adjust, and secure. While it offers a strong visual barrier, it should be considered a safety and access-control product rather than a high-security gate.

Expandable barriers are also sometimes referred to as scissor gates due to their expandable folding design. However, these products are designed primarily for temporary access control and safety applications.

For customers needing stronger protection against break-ins, DIY Xpanda recommends our Retractable Security Gates.

For certified security requirements, engineered systems, custom fabrication, or larger commercial and high-risk projects, Xpanda Security provides custom-built security solutions designed for large-scale and professional applications.

Installation Guide

How to Install an Expandable Barrier

DIY Xpanda Expandable Barriers are designed for quick installation and flexible access control. They are commonly used for pedestrian management, temporary access restriction, workplace safety, and securing areas that do not require permanent barriers.

Step 1: Measure the Opening

Measure the width of the area you wish to secure and confirm that the barrier's expansion range is suitable for the opening.

Common applications include:

  • Driveways
  • Garages
  • Worksites
  • Retail entrances
  • Warehouses
  • Restricted access areas

Step 2: Install the Fixed Side

Position the fixed side of the barrier against the wall, post, or mounting surface.

Using the supplied mounting brackets and fixings, securely attach the barrier to the structure.

Ensure the barrier is level before tightening all fixings.

Step 3: Install the Locking Point

Extend the barrier across the opening and identify the locking position.

Most installations use the supplied drop latch, although many customers also add a padlock for additional security and access control.

Step 4: Test the Barrier

Open and close the barrier several times to ensure smooth operation.

Confirm that:

  • The barrier expands and retracts freely
  • The drop latch aligns correctly
  • Any padlock or locking system functions properly
  • All fixings are secure

Installation Example

In the example below:

  • The right-hand side is fixed to the wall using mounting brackets
  • The barrier expands toward the left
  • A drop latch is installed at the opposite end to secure the barrier when extended
